As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples. He said to them, 'Go to the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie them and bring them to me. If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them. He will send them right away.'

This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet. The prophet said, 'Say to Daughter Zion, 'See, your king comes to you. He is gentle and riding on a donkey. He is riding on a donkey's colt.''

The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. They brought the donkey and the colt. They placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest heaven!'

When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred. They asked, 'Who is this?'

The crowds answered, 'This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.'

Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey. This was not the way a king would usually enter a city. Kings rode on horses. They came with armies. But Jesus came gently on a donkey. He came to bring peace. He came to save.

The people shouted, 'Hosanna!' That means 'Save us now!' They thought Jesus would save them from the Romans. They thought he would become their earthly king. They waved palm branches. They spread their cloaks on the road. They were welcoming him as their king.

But Jesus was not the kind of king they expected. He did not come to fight with swords. He came to die on a cross. He came to save them from their sins. A few days later, many of these same people would shout, 'Crucify him!'

Jesus knew what was going to happen. But he still rode into Jerusalem. He was not afraid. He was doing his Father's will. He came to give his life as a ransom for many. He is the King who came to serve. He is the King who came to save. He is worthy of all our praise.
