Pillar of Cloud and Fire Story - Bible
Send Wishes with Message Magic in Your Language. After the Israelites left Egypt, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country. That road was shorter. But God said, 'If they have to fight, they might change their minds. They might return to Egypt.' So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.
Moses took the bones of Joseph with him. Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, 'God will surely come to your aid. Then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.'
After leaving Sukkoth, they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud. He used it to guide them on their way. By night he went ahead of them in a pillar of fire. He used it to give them light. In this way, they could travel by day or night. The pillar of cloud did not leave its place by day. The pillar of fire did not leave its place by night. The Lord went before his people to show them where to go.
The pillar of cloud and fire was a sign of God's presence. It showed the people that God was with them. He was leading them every step of the way. The cloud protected them from the hot desert sun. The fire gave them light and warmth in the cold desert night. God was their guide and their protector.
When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country. That road was shorter. But God said, 'If they have to fight, they might change their minds. They might return to Egypt.' So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.
The Lord told Moses, 'Tell the Israelites to turn back and camp near Pi Hahiroth. Camp between Migdol and the sea. Camp across from Baal Zephon. Pharaoh will think, 'The Israelites are wandering around in the land. The desert has closed them in.' I will harden Pharaoh's heart. He will pursue you. I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army. The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.' So the Israelites did this.
When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, Pharaoh and his officials changed their minds about them. They said, 'What have we done? We have let the Israelites go! We have lost their services!' So Pharaoh had his chariot made ready. He took his army with him. He took six hundred of the best chariots. He took all the other chariots of Egypt. Officers were in charge of all of them.
The Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt. So he pursued the Israelites. The Israelites were marching out boldly. The Egyptians chased them. All Pharaoh's horses and chariots and horsemen followed them. They caught up with them as they camped by the sea near Pi Hahiroth, across from Baal Zephon.
As Pharaoh approached, the Israelites looked up. There were the Egyptians marching after them. They were terrified and cried out to the Lord. They said to Moses, 'Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? Didn't we say to you in Egypt, 'Leave us alone. Let us serve the Egyptians'? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!'
Moses answered the people, 'Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you. You need only to be still.'
Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea. Divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground. I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they will go in after them. I will gain glory through Pharaoh and all his army, through his chariots and his horsemen. The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I gain glory through Pharaoh, his chariots, and his horsemen.'
Then the angel of God, who had been traveling in front of Israel's army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud also moved from in front and stood behind them. It came between the armies of Egypt and Israel. All through the night the cloud brought darkness to one side and light to the other. So neither army went near the other all night long.
Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind. It blew all night long. The Lord turned the sea into dry land. The waters were divided. The Israelites went through the sea on dry ground. There was a wall of water on their right and on their left.
The Egyptians chased them. All Pharaoh's horses and chariots and horsemen followed them into the sea. During the last watch of the night, the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud at the Egyptian army. He threw it into confusion. He made the wheels of their chariots come off. They had difficulty driving. The Egyptians said, 'Let's get away from the Israelites! The Lord is fighting for them against Egypt.'
Then the Lord said to Moses, 'Stretch out your hand over the sea so that the waters may flow back over the Egyptians and their chariots and horsemen.'
Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. At daybreak, the sea went back to its place. The Egyptians were running toward it. The Lord swept them into the sea. The water flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen. It covered the entire army of Pharaoh that had followed the Israelites into the sea. Not one of them survived.
But the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground. There was a wall of water on their right and on their left. That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians. Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord. They put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.
Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the Lord:
'I will sing to the Lord, for he is highly exalted.
Both horse and driver he has hurled into the sea.
The Lord is my strength and my defense.
He has become my salvation.
He is my God, and I will praise him.
My father's God, and I will exalt him.
The Lord is a warrior.
The Lord is his name.'
The pillar of cloud and fire showed God's people that he was with them. It guided them, protected them, and gave them light. It stood between them and their enemies. God never left them. He led them every step of the way to the Promised Land. He still leads his people today. He guides us with his Word and his Spirit. He protects us and gives us light in the darkness. We can trust him to lead us, just as he led the Israelites out of Egypt.
