Jeremiah the Weeping Prophet Story - Bible
Send Wishes with Message Magic in Your Language. The word of the Lord came to Jeremiah. The Lord said, 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Before you were born I set you apart. I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.'
Jeremiah said, 'Alas, Sovereign Lord! I do not know how to speak. I am too young.'
But the Lord said to him, 'Do not say, 'I am too young.' You must go to everyone I send you to. You must say whatever I command you. Do not be afraid of them. I am with you and will rescue you.'
Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched Jeremiah's mouth. The Lord said to him, 'I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.'
Jeremiah was a prophet to the nation of Judah. He spoke God's words during a very hard time. The people had turned away from God. They worshiped false gods. They did not obey God's laws. Jeremiah warned them that God would send judgment if they did not turn back to him.
Jeremiah said, 'This is what the Lord says: 'Stand at the crossroads and look. Ask for the ancient paths. Ask where the good way is, and walk in it. Then you will find rest for your souls.' But you said, 'We will not walk in it.''
The people would not listen to Jeremiah. They made fun of him. They put him in prison. They threw him into a muddy cistern. They plotted to kill him. But Jeremiah kept speaking God's words. He could not stop. God's message was like fire in his bones.
Jeremiah's heart was broken for his people. He knew that disaster was coming. He cried out to God, 'Oh, that my head were a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears! I would weep day and night for the slain of my people.'
The Babylonians came and attacked Jerusalem. They destroyed the city. They burned down the temple. They took many people away as captives. Jeremiah watched his people suffer. He wrote a book called Lamentations. In it he said, 'I am the man who has seen affliction. He has besieged me and surrounded me with bitterness and hardship. He has made my skin grow old. He has broken my bones.'
But even in his sadness, Jeremiah remembered God's love. He wrote, 'Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed. His compassions never fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, 'The Lord is my portion. Therefore I will wait for him.''
Jeremiah also gave the people hope. He told them that God would not forget them. After seventy years, they would return to their land. God would make a new covenant with them. He said, 'The days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the people of Israel and with the people of Judah. I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.'
Jeremiah is called the weeping prophet because he cried over the sins of his people. He loved them even when they rejected him. He was faithful to speak God's words even when it was hard. He trusted that God would keep his promises. Jeremiah reminds us to be faithful to God even when others do not listen. He reminds us that God's love never fails. His mercies are new every morning.
