Elijah and the Prophets of Baal Story - Bible

Ahab was the king of Israel, but he did many bad things. He worshiped a false god named Baal. His wife Jezebel was even worse. She killed many of the Lord's prophets. So God sent Elijah the prophet to speak to King Ahab.

Elijah said, 'As surely as the Lord lives, there will be no rain or dew for the next few years. Not until I say so.' Then God told Elijah to go hide by a stream. Ravens brought him bread and meat every morning and evening.

After a while, the stream dried up because there was no rain. God sent Elijah to a town called Zarephath. A poor widow there shared her last bit of flour and oil with Elijah. God made her flour and oil never run out. Her whole family ate for many days.

After three years without rain, God told Elijah to go see King Ahab. Elijah said to the king, 'Gather all the people of Israel at Mount Carmel. Also bring the 450 prophets of Baal and the 400 prophets of Asherah.'

So King Ahab sent word everywhere. All the people came to Mount Carmel. Elijah stood in front of them and said, 'How long will you keep trying to follow both God and Baal? If the Lord is God, follow Him. But if Baal is God, follow him.' The people did not say a word.

Then Elijah said, 'I am the only prophet of the Lord here. There are 450 prophets of Baal. Bring two bulls. Let the prophets of Baal choose one bull and cut it into pieces. They will put it on wood but not light the fire. I will do the same with the other bull. The god who answers by sending fire from heaven is the real God.'

All the people shouted, 'That is a good idea!'

First, the prophets of Baal prepared their bull. They called out to Baal from morning until noon. 'Baal, answer us!' they shouted. But there was no answer. They danced around the altar they had made.

At noon, Elijah started making fun of them. 'Shout louder! Maybe Baal is thinking deeply. Maybe he went to the bathroom. Maybe he is traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and needs to wake up!' So the prophets shouted louder. They cut themselves with swords and spears until blood flowed. They kept on raving until evening. But still there was no answer.

Then Elijah said to all the people, 'Come here.' He repaired the altar of the Lord that had been torn down. He took twelve stones, one for each tribe of Israel. He dug a trench around the altar big enough to hold a large amount of water. He put the wood on the altar. He cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood.

Then Elijah said, 'Fill four large jars with water. Pour it on the offering and on the wood.' They did that. He said, 'Do it again.' They did it again. He said, 'Do it a third time.' They did it a third time. The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah prayed, 'Lord, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let everyone know today that you are God in Israel. Answer me, Lord, so these people will know that you are the one true God. Then they will turn back to you.'

Immediately, fire from heaven came down. It burned up the offering, the wood, the stones, the soil, and even the water in the trench! When all the people saw this, they fell facedown on the ground. They cried, 'The Lord is God! The Lord is God!'

Then Elijah said, 'Capture the prophets of Baal. Do not let any of them escape.' So the people captured them. Elijah took them down to the Kishon Valley and killed them there.

Then Elijah said to King Ahab, 'Go eat and drink. I hear the sound of heavy rain.' While Ahab went to eat, Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel. He bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. He told his servant, 'Go look toward the sea.'

The servant went and looked. He said, 'There is nothing there.' Seven times Elijah said, 'Go look again.' The seventh time, the servant said, 'I see a small cloud coming up from the sea. It is no bigger than a man's hand.'

Elijah said, 'Go tell Ahab to get his chariot and go home before the rain stops him.' Soon the sky grew black with clouds. The wind blew, and a heavy rain began to fall. After three years, the drought was over!

The people saw with their own eyes that the Lord is the one true God. He answers prayers and sends fire from heaven. There is no god like the Lord!
